A Silly Grin In Las Vegas - #7

Tuesday 10 April

Alarm set for 5:00, up in the dark for an early start. Fruit juice and a banana for breakie. Carrying all our our luggage through the casino to get to the bikes, there are still people sitting at the slots! WTH, (that's 'what the heck'); this is a family blog! The ladies where still walking about in skimpy dresses serving up drinks to the patrons. Oh my gosh!

On the road at sunrise, quite cool. I wouldn't want it to get any cooler. Was nice riding though with a surprising amount of traffic on the road.

Brunch saw us at Seligman at the famed Road Kill Cafe. This place was awesome, their motto is 'You kill it - we'll grill it'. Had a great omelette and coffee. I'm worried, I'm getting to not mind the coffee. I'm getting Americanised! Bought a Route 66 pin for my jacket and a fridge magnet for home. We are on the famous Route 66! Their menu made me laugh out loud. Just my sence of humour.

Yum brunch
Great menu!

We left holding our tummies and burping. Threw our legs over our hosses and headed out of town. Murray had his little 'whoopsie' leaving the car park there so he's had his 'one'!

A replica but pretty much as it once was!

Unfortunately this road is now mostly the 40 so you're not always riding Route 66 but it still goes through some beautiful country. We passed through Williams and Flagstaff (which looked lovely) and pressed on to Winslow to stand on a corner! And stand on a corner we did. But not before we stopped at Mojo Cafe for a proper coffee. Found my Mojo there so bought the T-shirt, hehe... Good coffee. Murray found some hazzard lights on his Harley that we never knew existed, to this day we still don't know how he found them or how he turned them off, (eventually).

From the Mojo Cafe!

Got the obligatory photo standin 'on the corner' although I remain somewhat disappointed that I didn't see a girl in a flat bed Ford. Oh yes, and a pin. Nev and Phil bought good taste shirts that Murray & I said couldn't be worn whilst we were in the virsinity, and I'm not normally fussy!

Standin on the corner!

I like Winslow, it had a nice relaxed feel about it and it looked like a town that hadn't given up and was making the most of it's fame. Quite pretty, good coffee at 'Mojo'.

We pressed on to Holbrook for the night. What a contrast this town was to Las Vegas.

It was about this time that we all realized that we had totally underestimated both the time and distances that we had planned. Phil & Murray had a deadline in New Orleans and still had a long way to go. Nev & I could sort of turn and loop back at any time but also will have to adjust route. I missed seeing the Grand Canyon which was high on my my wish list. Phil & Murray shortened up their route to make sure of getting to their destination in good time. We will have to too. The best thing about Holbrook was Nev and I being able to finally get our washing done at last. We stayed at the Super 8 which was OK but nowhere to eat and the wireless was pathetic. And we paid way too much. Not much to look at and a bit of a windy dust bowl. Angus burger at MacDs for tea which wasn't ideal. Still, found a cheap liquor store and sat around in the rooms with a couple of beers and more than a few laughs.

We decided to carry on one more night with them and then turn down towards Tucson, partly so with didn't have to backtrack and partly to avoid the bad weather that was coming. We would head to Deming New Mexico.

Note of Interest - The air is so dry in the desert (particularly through the Mojave and Vegas) it is playing hell with my nostrils & lips! The snot in your nose turns into little bricks that are easy to pick and they make little tinging noises when the hit the bin - BUT this leaves your nose unprotected and I think I'm getting cracks on the inside.  So what do you do, you can't poke conditioner up there, can you?

Night night! Just fancy, clean undies in the morning! Yay! I'm a man of simple pleasures!
